A collection of lighting pieces and spatial set design
During January 2024, Studio 88 Artist Residency hosted Richard Henley, British set designer and product designer with expertise includes set design on large scale film and theatre productions, as well as a product design for the interior design industry. During the residency he launched an exciting project with three Thai craftspeople, namely these collaborators are Charm Learn Ceramic Studio, Ravee Textile Studio and SAK local craftsman. During this one-month period, the artists developed and prototyped four lighting designs, combining local techniques in ceramics, hand-dyed textiles, and teak wood to create innovative pieces. In bringing these crafts together (which are often exhibited in isolation from one another) as well as putting them into a new design context via spatial set design, the artists are able to effectively scale what local craft can look like.
In addition to combining these crafts, skills, and materials, the artists think about ways of presentation and communication, placing them in a new spatial set design context, which reveals the possibility of enhancing and enhancing local craftsmanship in the form of immersive installation. This is in line with the idea of elevating local work to international level both in concept, production process and presentation.
The artists now aim to build on this by creating an installation space showcasing these designs, as well as new furniture pieces, incorporating many of the same materials to build an immersive physical space. This will be a beautiful backdrop for the designs, but more pertinently the artists’ concept is to take the visitors on a journey that encourages them to engage with how the pieces have been made, both the human labour and the natural resources involved in making them. Where typically this appreciation of raw materials has been done before in a scientific manner, the artist hope to stage more of a theatrical experience, drawing on his set design expertise, that they hope will create a stronger impact with visitors.
By combining crafts together within single designs, and subsequently presenting them in an exciting and ambitious manner, we hope to scale local craft approaches to creativity and technology. Underlining this is an encouragement for visitors to engage with the material origins of the designs, but in a theatrical and memorable experience. This immersive installation will create an impression of a better experience and have a positive impact on visitors. It will demonstrate the possibility of continuity and expanding effective business results in private areas, private areas, or public areas.
