Film Program : Wankerd (The Other Side)

"วานเกิด Wankerd" (The Other Side) is a 42-minute short film that tells the story of a single mother in Chiang Mai who struggles with life's hardships and is unable to shake off the grief of losing her child. Her journey leads her to discover the ancient Lanna ritual known as "Wankerd", which may hold the key to resolving her emotional turmoil. The film is a collaboration between Film Space, CEA Chiang Mai, the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology at Maejo University, and the Friends Without Borders Foundation. It is directed by the award-winning short film director Chewang Chaiyawan, with a script by Natthan Krungsri and production led by Kringkarn Jaroenkul. The film also benefits from the expertise of Professor Sanan Thamthi, a prominent Lanna writer and historian, who serves as a script advisor and also makes an appearance in the film. What makes this film particularly special is not just the collaboration of experienced filmmakers, scholars, and Lanna cultural experts, but also the involvement of young people from Chiang Mai. Many of them had no prior film production experience before taking part in the project. This short film marks the debut of these young filmmakers, who are students and youths from Chiang Mai, as part of the Film Lab initiative. This program, supported by CEA Chiang Mai, helps cultivate the talents of youth in Northern Thailand, allowing 15 selected young individuals to work alongside professional filmmakers to create the film. "Wankerd" is not only a heartfelt story of loss and cultural discovery, but also an inspiring example of community collaboration and youth empowerment in the arts.
