kōm
KŌM is a contemporary lighting collection inspired by the Yi Peng festival and traditional Lanna sky lanterns. Comprising a table lamp, floor lamp, and pendant light, the collection reinterprets the cultural significance of lanterns and brings their meaning into everyday living.
The project combines local materials and craftsmanship with contemporary manufacturing processes, utilizing saa paper from Ban Ton Pao, ceramic elements, and 3D printing technology to explore new possibilities in form, structure, and lighting design. Each material is carefully selected for its unique ability to diffuse, transmit, and reflect light, creating a variety of atmospheric lighting experiences.
Drawing inspiration from the forms and construction details of traditional sky lanterns, the collection adopts a modular and customizable design approach. The components can be arranged and assembled in different configurations to suit various spaces and applications, while also reducing storage and transportation requirements and promoting long-term sustainability.
Rather than replicating the traditional Yi Peng lantern, KŌM transforms its cultural values into a collection of contemporary objects designed for everyday use. The project creates a dialogue between local craftsmanship, modern technology, and sustainable design, demonstrating how cultural heritage can be reimagined for contemporary life while responding to current environmental challenges.
