Will Langston

Golden Smiles: Portraits from Rural Northern Thailand

Will Langston is an American documentary photographer based in Chiang Mai, Thailand. His practice centers on human connection, dignity, and the subtle beauty of daily life, especially within rural and underrepresented communities. Working exclusively with 35mm film, Langston brings a tactile honesty and warmth to his images, capturing the nuances of gesture, atmosphere, and emotion that might otherwise go unnoticed. Golden Smiles: Portraits from Rural Northern Thailand is a long-term documentary portrait series photographed over the span of five years. The project began as an organic exploration—wandering through rice fields, village markets, and quiet homes—and slowly evolved into a visual archive of something shared but often unspoken: the power of a smile. Shot entirely on 35mm film, the series documents the people of rural Northern Thailand—farmers, elders, children, and small vendors—with a focus on authentic expression and natural light. Each image is a celebration of everyday life, joy, and human resilience. Presented as large, unframed prints on matte paper, the photographs are accompanied by short text fragments—some taken from conversations, others left open for interpretation—to offer space for reflection rather than explanation. What makes Golden Smiles especially resonant within a design context is its premise: that emotional connection, generosity, and hospitality are themselves forms of design. In places where community thrives without formal infrastructure, the smile becomes a kind of social architecture—built, maintained, and shared across generations. Through a human-centered lens, the project aligns with the theme LOCAL PLUS by elevating unseen aspects of rural life and honoring the emotional intelligence embedded in local culture. An interactive component will accompany the exhibition: visitors will be invited to take a portrait using thermal printing, contributing their own ‘golden smile’ to a growing community wall within the space. This wall will evolve daily, inviting the public to become participants in the exhibition, not just observers. It transforms the show into a living conversation—a growing archive of joy, openness, and human connection. Langston’s work has been exhibited both in Thailand and internationally. With Golden Smiles, he invites audiences to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the quiet designs that hold communities together.
