Cats of the City, City of Cats

“Maew Mueang, Mueang Maew” (City Cats, Cats of the City) This project is a creative extension of our previous exhibition, “Khuan Khama Cats”, showcased during Chiang Mai Design Week 2024. This year, we shift from an exhibition format to a collection of creative merchandise that explores the relationship between cats and the city of Chiang Mai—through tourism, local language, and cultural belief systems. The goal is to create designs that are accessible, charming, and meaningful, while embedding stories that promote local tourism and heritage. Aligned with the CMDW 2025 theme, “Local Plus,” this project presents “cats” as urban cultural agents—creatures not only present in the everyday lives of Chiang Mai residents but also deeply intertwined with the city’s architecture, rituals, and rhythms. The collection includes five product categories: • Postcards & Lucky Sticker Packs Featuring cats as guides to hidden corners of Chiang Mai, including temples, nature spots, and local neighborhoods. The format invites playfulness while encouraging interest in exploring real places. • “Meow Kam Mueang” Coloring Book Cats introduce basic Northern Thai dialect through visits to Chiang Mai landmarks. Designed for children and visitors from other regions, it doubles as both a souvenir and an engaging tool for learning local culture. • Urban Cat Tarot Deck A reimagining of traditional tarot cards using urban cat characters. Drawn from observations of feline behaviors in Thai cities, this set includes both full decks and single fortune-sticker draws based on randomly selected cat archetypes. • “Catlendar” A 12-month calendar pairing Chiang Mai’s annual festivals and traditions with custom-designed cat characters, celebrating the seasonal charm and spirit of local life. • Khuan Khama Cats Publication Set A concise summary of our 2024 exhibition—covering research, design process, public response, and collectible stickers from the original show. The project aspires to expand its cultural and spatial narrative across Chiang Mai by presenting local sites, traditions, and beliefs through a lens that is fun, engaging, and universally relatable. By using “cats” as a soft cultural mediator, “Maew Mueang, Mueang Maew” brings together architecture, design, memory, and daily urban life—creating shared experiences and sparking a dialogue between creativity and tourism through the cats that quietly shape our cities.
