Giles Ryder's Neon Installations
Fractured Galaxy extends Giles' research into spatial practices influenced by modernity and his long-standing engagement with Southeast Asia as an Australian Artist.
This work will take form as an immersive spatial installation incorporating neon and reflective surfaces. It will dynamically respond to the architectural and cultural contexts of Thailand and beyond, continuing Giles' investigation into light, materiality, and experiential space.
Fractured Galaxy, a loose abstract cartoon-like galaxy, is rendered as a graphic proposition of matter at its most vast and deep—reduced to a version of electrically charged tubes of material—fractured and orbiting coloured neon. In one sense, it is a Mickey Mouse galaxy, but as we know, even within these reductions there is sense that can be made, and nonsense is more plausible in today’s greater cultural environment than from the intense fracturing of a complex world. The simplicity of things is also our much-needed respite from the digital into the material and back.
